Food Adventures of a Traveling Vet: Sandwich Edition

As a professional on-the-road veterinarian, I believe that I have become an expert foodie of the Washington, D.C. area. Mostly by talking with my clients I have come to learn about great food establishments. Sometimes out of shear hunger, I discover out of the way places to eat. Often having to grab food on the go, I appreciate good quality, reasonable prices, and unique offerings. Here are some of the places I like to grab a sandwich....

Sundevich - 1314 9th St NW, Washington, DC 20001

Sundevich offers sandwiches from around the world. Unique, tasty, and hearty. This sandwich establishment is in an old garage in an alley off of O St NW. It is small with an exciting atmosphere. Although, for me, the music is too loud to have a conversation, so I like to grab my food to go. They also have delicious mini moon pie desserts if you aren't too full after the sandwich!

Bub and Pops - 1815 M St NW, Washington, DC 20036

Philadelphia style brisket sandwiches that are very filling. My first time there I saw two large police officers who were voraciously chowing down on their sandwiches -- I knew it must be good. For a soup special they had matzoh ball soup that was just as good my family's. Located in the basement, the venue is small but quaint. My first sandwich was brisket with pickled vegetables and cheese on top on a hoagie roll. Knocked my socks off!

Paul - 1078 Wisconsin Ave NW, WDC 20007 (and many more locations)

A patisserie, viennoiserie, bistro, etc. with great sandwiches. The bread is fantastic. I loved the pavot poullet (sliced chicken) and salami/cornichon pickle sandwiches. Do not leave without a dessert. The pain chocolate is the best I’ve ever had. The chocolate hazelnut croissant is fantastic.

Call Your Mother Deli - 3301 Georgia Ave NW, Washington, DC 20010, 701 8th St SE, Washington, DC 20003, 3428 O Street, NW, Washington, DC 20007, and 8804 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, MD 20814

Amazing bagel sandwiches both for breakfast and lunch. Limited hours. Delicious drinks and babka muffins. They change the menu often.
